Tribal youth participate in drive-through Easter Event

By Puyallup Tribal News Staff Easter celebrations kicked off Saturday, March 27, with the Easter Bunny and helpers distributing gifts to Tribal youth. Little Wild Wolves Youth Center staff, along with volunteers and members of the Tribal Council, hosted the free drive-through event. With COVID-19 restrictions still in place, kids remained in their families’ vehicles as they circled Chief Leschi Schools and collected candy, toothbrushes and Gatorade. “Everything we have learned from COVID-19 will benefit our future,” said Youth Director Lisa Earl. Youth Center staff help family displaced by home fire

By Lisa Pemberton, Puyallup Tribal News Editor When the Billie-Satiacum family was displaced by a fire in early February, the Puyallup Tribe’s Youth Center staff mobilized to gather donations, coordinate emergency housing and provide support for the family. The Youth Center’s activities coordinators recently put together gift baskets for the family’s youths, ages 10, 12 and 16. The laundry baskets included blankets, water bottles, toys, games, toothbrushes, toiletries, snacks and Crocs, the kids’ favorite shoes. “They’re starting over again, so we wanted to make sure they were taken care of,” said Youth Director Lisa Earl. “They pretty much lost everything.”…

Dorothy Earl shares family’s fry bread recipe for future generations

By Lisa Pemberton, Puyallup Tribal News Editor Puyallup Tribal Member Dorothy Earl has been making fry bread for more than 40 years. She estimates she’s probably made about 200,000 pieces of fry bread – for youth dinners, funerals, the 2018 Canoe Journey and other special events over the years. Earl, who is the cook at the Little Wild Wolves Youth Center and known to many as “Auntie Dot,” uses a baking powder fry bread recipe that was passed down to her by her great-auntie on her mom’s side of the family. “It originated in Yakima, where I grew up,” Earl…
