Studying Full Methane Life Cycle Critical to PNW Climate Policy

Studying Full Methane Life Cycle Critical to PNW Climate Policy

Better accounting of methane releases could help us avoid a tremendous mistake. Written by Tarika Powell for the Sightline Institute "The fossil fuel industry purports that natural gas is “clean,” but that claim fails to account for climate-damaging methane leaks along the supply chain. Poor external reporting requirements mean gas companies don’t have to share how much fugitive methane escapes into the atmosphere each year. With no one to compel more data-sharing from the industry, it can convince policymakers and the public that any uncertainty in independent research is enough reason to discredit the questions themselves." TAKE ACTION: No LNG outreach to Tacoma City Council — Email

We are trying to get 500 people to send a message to the City of Tacoma demanding that the City complete a new project impact statement (referred to as an SEIS) for the safety of our people, lands and waters. Fight for social and environmental justice: Stop the LNG plant

Letter to the editor originally printed in The Olympian. "People of conscience in the Tacoma area must speak out against the proposed LNG terminal. The facility would be built in immediate proximity to the Puyallup Tribe reservation in violation of the Medicine Creek Treaty. Additionally, the “blast zone” of the plant encompasses other residential areas as well as the Northwest Detention Center; NWDC has effectively no plan to protect the people unjustly detained there if the LNG facility combusts. The health and safety risks associated with the LNG plant will disproportionately impact communities who already face injustice every day. This…

Calling Natural Gas a “Bridge Fuel” is Alarmingly Deceptive

Calling Natural Gas a “Bridge Fuel” is Alarmingly Deceptive

Written by Tarika Powell for the Sightline Institute There’s a reason the methane industry deliberately avoids acknowledging everything before combustion Methane gas, commonly referred to as “natural gas,” is the fossil fuel with the most positive image. Natural gas is marketed as not just cleaner than other fossil fuels, but as “clean”—a demonstrably false descriptor with an endless number of caveats. Oil and gas companies promote gas subsidiaries by prominently featuring the word “clean” in the company’s name or marketing and suggest we pair natural gas with renewable energy as a solution to our greenhouse gas problems. This dubious pairing has found its…

Tacoma’s long-delayed natural gas plant has a community on edge

Tacoma’s long-delayed natural gas plant has a community on edge

"Annette Bryan’s part in the years-long conflict over a liquefied natural gas facility in Tacoma began close to home. For over 40 years, she’s been a resident of the neighborhood adjacent to the Tideflats, a waterfront industrial area in eastern Tacoma that houses its port. It’s where she now raises her three grandchildren and cares for her mother. In 2015, she noticed groups of people near her house picketing in protest of the facility. She became aware of its existence only after speaking to them."Read the full article on Crosscut.
