Puyallup Tribe appeals Tacoma LNG decision

Puyallup Tribe appeals Tacoma LNG decision

Tribal Council statement on Tribe’s appeal of the decision by state Pollutions Control Hearings Board to uphold Puget Sound Energy’s permit to build an LNG facility:  As we said last month, we are profoundly disappointed the board upheld the remainder of the permit and we expect the decision will embolden companies that start projects that feed climate change and put vulnerable communities at risk. We were put here to protect these lands and waters and that is what we will continue to do. We will continue the fight. Too much is at stake. Read the appeal here.

Study: LNG-fueled ships could increase greenhouse gas emissions

A new study by the International Council on Clean Transportation found that switching to liquefied natural gas (LNG) marine fuel could increase the maritime industry’s greenhouse gas emissions. The study included an analysis of upstream emissions, combustion emissions and unburned methane. LNG is mostly methane, and the Puyallup Tribe is fighting against Puget Sound Energy’s proposed LNG facility in the Tacoma Tideflats. Researchers say the most popular type of LNG ship engine – a low pressure, dual fuel, medium speed four stroke – is also the leakiest. Using LNG with that technology would create climate emissions that are 70-82 percent…
