Tribe was never consulted about the dangerous LNG project that threatens the Salish Sea
TACOMA, Wash.—The Puyallup Tribe of Indians today voiced strong opposition to Puget Sound Energy’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) project during a public comment hearing held by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA).
“The agency’s failure to engage the Tribe in meaningful consultation is an insult to our rights and a threat to the entire community,” Chairman David Bean said in prepared remarks. “We call on community members to stand with us by submitting comments to PSCAA asking for the Agency to deny the construction permit for Tacoma LNG.”
The Tribe has long called for the permit to be denied because PSCAA and other government agencies failed to consult with the Tribe about the project, which is sited on the Tribe’s ancestral homeland.
The hearing at the Rialto Theater was attended by hundreds of community members. Among the organizations supporting the Puyallup Tribe were the Puyallup Water Warriors, 350 Seattle, 350 Tacoma, Native Daily Network, Power Past Fracked Gas, Sierra Club, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Washington Environmental Council, Redefine Tacoma, Advocates for a Cleaner Tacoma, Vashon Climate Action, The Conversation, Columbia Riverkeeper, Stand.earth, and Earth Ministry.
Puyallup supporters marched from Don Pugnetti Park to a rally outside of the theater in advance of the hearing.
